Club rush to raise teenager’s €45m release clause after Man City hold transfer talks – report

Sporting CP are trying to bump up the release clause of their young jewel Rafael Leao with Manchester City showing serious interest in signing the striker, Record reports.

The Blues were reported to have made a €25million (£22.2million) bid for Leao, in an attempt to get ahead of Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid, who have all made inquiries.

Portugal’s Record states an official bid hasn’t been made yet, but that City representatives have been in Lisbon to informally discuss a deal for the prodigious 18-year-old.

Sporting want to increase Leao’s release clause, which is said to currently be €45million (£39.7million), believing a player likened to Kylian Mbappé in terms of potential could fetch an even bigger fee in the near future.

The Portuguese giants want to maximise Leao’s value by integrating him into the first team. To date, he has mostly starred for Sporting’s B team and UEFA Youth League side, but a full breakthrough to Sporting’s main squad is only a matter of time.

City are making advances to land Leao early, but if Sporting can convince him to sign fresh terms, it could complicate Pep Guardiola’s pursuit of Portugal’s hottest young talent.
