Bernardo Silva has played down Manchester City’s chances of winning the elusive Champions League this season, naming a trio of historical giants who stand in the way.
The 23-year-old believes Barça, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, who have a history of lifting Europe’s most coveted trophy, should be deemed favourites, despite’s City’s incredible form this season.
“Favourites for the Champions League title? No. I think teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich are more used to playing games in this special competition than us,” the former Monaco winger said after City’s 4-0 win over Basel.
“Even though we are in a good a moment, and we know we can try to do something, we are not the favourites.”
Bernardo dubbed City’s performance against Basel ‘amazing’, after the runaway Premier League leaders blew away the Swiss champions, who just months earlier had beaten Manchester United in the same stadium.
“I think it was an amazing performance.
“To come here and win 4-0 against this team, away from home – it is always so difficult in this competition.
“We started the game very strongly, we scored three (early) goals. We were very happy with this score and we hope we can finish the job at home with our fans.”
