Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney, for many years a nemesis of Manchester City fans, has praised Pep Guardiola’s team and their entertaining brand of football.
The 32-year-old, now back at Everton after returning from Manchester United last summer, was a guest on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football and said of Pep’s side: “In terms of catching Manchester City, certainly not this season and, if I’m honest, next season it will be very difficult.
“It’s not nice to say but if you can’t enjoy that style of play you won’t enjoy football. It’s great to watch, the movement, the confidence on the ball, the goalkeeper [Ederson]. It’s almost perfect football at times.
“I think Guardiola is putting the foundations in place of trying to emulate that Barcelona team and you can see they’re certainly on the way to doing that.
“Maybe in the summer, if they bring one or two new players in, they’re not that far off. Obviously they have to win the trophies.”
The former Manchester United forward was part of and scored in the only match at the Etihad to have seen City drop points this season, a 1-1 draw between the Blues and Everton back in August.
And despite being a professional rival of City for many years – despite almost jumping ship from United back in 2010 – Rooney has acknowledged that Pep Guardiola’s City are the great entertainers of English football and they are backing it up with results, still sitting 13 points clear at the top of the table.
