Manchester City will not be signing Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred this month after switching their attention to a move for Riyad Mahrez, the Daily Mail reports.
The Mahrez pursuit is now over this month after Leicester requested a package worth £95million and with so little time left in the window, City will have to wait until summer to try and sign Fred.
If Shakhtar were to sell now, they would have no time to find a replacement, so the 24-year-old will remain in the Ukraine and City will hope neither his price-tag or the number of suitors for the all-action midfielder increase before the next transfer window.
City remain favourites to sign Fred in the summer, with Yaya Touré set to depart when his contract ends – the Ivorian has snubbed a big-money move to China this month as he looks to play a part in City’s ongoing quadruple hunt.
