Pep’s Presser: Length of Sané’s injury confirmed, chances of more signings, comments on Laporte

Manchester City resume their quest to win the Premier League on Wednesday night, hosting Alan Pardew’s West Brom who are fresh off a huge cupset win over Liverpool at Anfield.

Pep Guardiola answered questions from the press ahead of tomorrow’s game at the CFA this afternoon.

The first and worst news of the press conference was that Leroy Sané will be out of action for 6 to 7 weeks with ankle ligament damage.

“Leroy Sané will be out for up to six or seven weeks,” the boss told the assembled media.

Asked about new signing Aymeric Laporte, Pep obviously spoke highly of the new club record buy.

“He’s played since a young age in LaLiga so at a high level. He’s strong in the air and fast. He’s got good quality and we are delighted.

“He is able to start right away. The PL is special in many senses. But he is intelligent. It’s always tough for a new player but we will be patient.

“We are very aware of his skills, he’s an experienced central defender on the big stages and has the skills to help us. He is the perfect age to be with us for a while.”

Could there be more signings on the way? Talk continues about Fred joining and this afternoon there is a big rumour that Riyad Mahrez could be on his way. But the boss seemed to play down the chances…

“I don’t know. I don’t think so but in football everything can happen. 95 or 99% that nothing is going to happen.”

He also confirmed that Tosin Adarabioyo could go out on loan, and “thinks” Eliaquim Mangala will stay after reports linking him with strugglers Newcastle.

“Maybe (Tosin will go on loan). We are looking for the best solution, he needs minutes to play.”

City have been criticised for their large spending, but Pep pointed out how the outlay has been spread on rebuilding an old squad.

“I understand criticism but we have spent £300m on 6 players. Others have done it on two.

“We had a lot of older players out of contract. To compete we needed to spend. A club can decide to spend on two players. We did it in a different way.”
