Manchester City are in talks with strugglers Newcastle about loaning Eliaquim Mangala to Rafa Benitez’s side for the remainder of the season, Simon Mullock of the Mirror reports.
The 26-year-old will fall further down the pecking order following the arrival of Aymeric Laporte, who is expected to be announced as City’s record signing tomorrow.
If Vincent Kompany is fit, that would essentially make the Frenchman Pep Guardiola’s fifth choice centre-back, and he is very much surplus to requirements.
Talks are ongoing between the clubs over a loan deal, with City hoping Newcastle take on the bulk of Mangala’s £80,000-a-week salary.
Mangala enjoyed a good spell on loan at Valencia last season and could help Newcastle in their relegation scrap, with his Manchester City career now all but over.
