Laporte underwent medical tests on Sunday, the Bilbao daily newspaper claims, and City plan to unveil their latest signing tomorrow.
Blues chiefs informed Athletic that today they will deposit the 23-year-old’s €65million release clause with La Liga today (Monday). The team of lawyers commissioned by City to oversee the deal arrived on Wednesday and have now moved from Bilbao to Madrid to finalise to transfer.
Laporte is expected to be in attendance on Wednesday when Manchester City face West Brom in the Premier League, but despite being in excellent physical condition it is highly unlikely that he will play any part.
The talented centre-back was an ‘express request’ of Pep Guardiola, who wanted another ball-playing central defender in his ranks, as well as more squad depth with club captain Vincent Kompany regularly injured and Eliaquim Mangala not rated highly by the Catalan coach.
