Manchester City remain in negotiations with Shakhtar Donetsk about doing a deal for Brazilian midfielder Fred, Duncan Castles reports in The Sunday Times.
News has been scarce about this potential transfer since Sky Italia transfer guru Gianluca Di Marzio reported a week ago that City were edging closer to striking a deal for the 24-year-old.
Castles reports that talks are ongoing with the player expected to move to City for a fee of about £35million. The sticking point is when Fred would move to the Etihad Stadium – now or in the summer.
Shakhtar, who remain in the Champions League and have a Round of 16 two-legged tie with Roma coming up, would like to delay Fred’s move until the summer, knowing that the loss of their star midfielder could damage their chances of progress in the competition.
Pep Guardiola is pressing for the player to arrive this week though, most likely mindful of how reliant he is on Fernandinho, with Yaya Touré no longer considered good enough to play the ‘No. 6’ role in the majority of games.
City have until Wednesday to convince Shakhtar to part with the player now, as Guardiola looks to add further depth to his squad for an assault on all four competitions the Blues remain in.
The Daily Star today suggests Manchester United could still hijack City’s deal for Fred, but Castles, a journalist close to Jose Mourinho’s camp, made no such suggestion in his article for The Sunday Times.
