On the heels of RMC Sport breaking the news that Manchester City have successfully lured away one of Paris Saint-Germain’s top academy talents, confirmation has arrived from a local source.
The Le Parisien newspaper, reliable for all things PSG, confirms in its Saturday edition that 17-year-old defensive midfielder Claudio Gomes will swap the Parc des Princes for the Etihad Stadium this summer, signing a five-year deal with the current Premier League leaders.
City are described as a ‘big rival’ to PSG, which is true on and off the pitch, with both clubs having Champions League aspirations, but also owned by Arab nations which are currently on bad terms.
The two clubs are unlikely to do any business directly while such political tensions exist, but because Gomes is not signed to a professional contract at PSG, City were able to deal with his representatives and family. Pep Guardiola himself is said to have directly played a part in convincing the teenager to join.
Gomes is considered one of Europe’s greatest midfield talents of his age group and his departure is being treated as a major blow to PSG’s youth department in France.
