“Negotiations have been very fast”: How Laporte to Manchester City deal accelerated in hours

Reports are coming thick and fast, from every noteworthy source in Spain. On their second attempt, Manchester City have landed the talented 23-year-old Athletic Bilbao centre-back Aymeric Laporte, with a deal to be closed imminently.

Uri Mora broke the story late on Sunday on El Chiringuito TV and after some denials from Laporte’s camp, more and more reports surfaced that the French-born defender would soon be Etihad-bound.

There are many sources of information tonight reporting slightly different versions of the story, and even the length of his contract is disputed – although the reliable El Correo indicates that Laporte will sign a six-year deal.

Madrid-based Marca has some interesting information on how quickly this situation has developed, saying “negotiations have been very fast”.

On Tuesday morning, neither Athletic Club or Laporte were aware that City planned to move so swiftly. Then at noon, Laporte had an opportunity to talk to the club president while the team was training, learning that a deal was afoot.

Few say “no” to Pep Guardiola once, let alone twice, and Laporte has this time relayed his intention to join Manchester City from the Basque club – and only a late change of heart could stop it now.

City are preparing the necessary paperwork to process the payment of his €65million release clause, on top of which another €5million in developmental fees will be paid. And Marca states that Aymeric Laporte will be a Manchester City player, at the very latest, early next week.
