It didn’t take long – just hours after a potentially huge story broke in Spain that Manchester City were back in for Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte, the denials have arrived.
A relatively unknown Spanish journalist named Uri Mora broke the ‘news’ on El Chiringuito TV last night that City were going to trigger 23-year-old Laporte’s €65million (£54.7million) release clause before the end of January’s transfer window.

from the Basque Country on Monday come denials of this new transfer rumour. A person described as a ‘source close to Laporte’ spoke to ElDesmarque Bizkaia, telling them that “there is nothing at all” to the story that he could join City this month.

Of course, agents and representatives are known to be coy and give little away, but unless a more credible source backs up Mora’s story, this may be a case of journalist trying to make a name for himself on TV.
City may well move for a centre-back before the January window shuts, but most reports still point to West Brom skipper Jonny Evans being the one most likely to reinforce a defence that relies heavily on John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi.
