Di Marzio: Manchester City are close to an agreement to sign Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk

Manchester City are close to completing a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred for a fee between €30million and €40million, the esteemed Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia reports.

City’s interest in the all-action Brazilian midfielder is no secret, but the reputable Di Marzio is now reporting that a deal is close, with the clubs just needing to settle on a fee, despite the resistance of Shakhtar, who are not keen to sell their star midfielder this month.

Fred has given his “OK” for a transfer to go through and now only a full agreement between the two clubs is needed. The next days will be decisive in determining whether a transfer takes place this month.

The remaining question would then be if Fred joins Pep Guardiola’s team immediately or returns to Shakhtar until the Ukrainian season ends. The tone of Di Marzio’s article was that the 24-year-old would arrive in January, which would explain Shakhtar’s reluctance to sell.

Fred, full name Frederico Rodrigues Santos, has won 6 caps for Brazil and has made it clear he’d love to join City recently.

In a recent interview, he declared: “I’m eagerly waiting for Guardiola’s phone call to arrive.

“I think I would grow a lot with him. I can still grow [as a player].

“England is the best league in the world, I’ve always had the dream of playing there. It could suit me well. It would be important to play in England with one of the great coaches. It’s a dream I have.”

More recently he said: “After our victory against City in the Champions League I met Guardiola.

“He congratulated me for qualifying, and he praised Shakhtar as a team. It’s a great pleasure to be acknowledged by a manager of his caliber.

“I have not had any contact with Manchester City [as a club], I’ve been reading the rumours in the press. I hope that if contact occurs, that things [between us] can develop really quickly.”
