Manchester City could be edging closer to striking a deal for Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred with news that the Ukrainian giants are close to signing a defensive midfielder with the profile to replace him.
Gianluca Di Marzio of Sky Italia reports today that Shakhtar are in negotiations with Dinamo Zagreb to sign the highly-rated 19-year-old, Nikola Moro, for a fee of around €15million (£13.2million).

While this is by no means confirmation of Fred joining City, paying such a figure for a defensive midfielder could be a sign that Shakhtar are preparing for life after their Brazilian midfield ace.
It has been mooted in recent days that in light of interest from the likes of Manchester United, City could sign Fred in January and potentially loan him back to Shakhtar until the summer – thus reducing the risk of United hijacking a deal or the player’s price rising even higher.
This new transfer development could be coincidental but may also be good news for City’s pursuit of Fred.
To learn more about Fred, Jordan Elgott invited Manuel Veth, owner and editor of post-Soviet football site Futbolgrad, on to the City Watch Podcast for some in-depth insight on the all-action midfielder, as well as other topics.
