Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly has occasionally been mentioned as a potential signing for Manchester City in recent months.
The 26-year-old Senegalese international has been a key part of Maurizio Sarri’s impressive Napoli side and featured in both games against City during the Champions League group stage.
With City certainly in the hunt for a centre-back and Virgil van Dijk heading for Liverpool, could Koulibaly be another high-level option?
The player’s agent Bruno Satin spoke to Radio CRC about the topic, saying: “City? “Of course, due to his game quality and his skills, Kalidou is deemed as someone who could join an even more prestigious club than Napoli.
“Besides, most Napoli players are tracked by A-list clubs.
“However, while Guardiola wants a new defender in, he’s looking more for a backup for Kompany, not someone like Kalidou, who can become a full-on regular at City.”
The comments of Koulibaly’s agent would lend credibility to reports that City are looking at West Brom skipper Jonny Evans and Iñigo Martínez of Real Sociedad, two players who most likely wouldn’t be overly demanding of game time.
Unless Guardiola plans to switch to a back three regularly, Koulibaly may not be guaranteed a weekly start thanks to the imperious partnership formed by Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones, and that could put him off an immediate move to the Etihad Stadium.
