Manchester City tonight overcame a resilient Newcastle side 1-0 at St. James’ Park and continued to set a new record for most Premier League wins in a row – the tally is now at 18.
But an even bigger record was set tonight. Famed Spanish statistician ‘MisterChip’ tweeted a quite remarkable stat that should have everyone excited and proud of what this team has achieving.
Manchester City have had the best opening 20 matches (19 wins, 1 draw) in the history of the 5 major European leagues (England – Spain – Germany – Italy – France).
The previous best was also set by a Pep Guardiola side, Bayern Munich in 2013-14 (18 wins, 2 draws), a record he has now broken with his ‘Shark Team’.

You have to go back to 1987-88 and look outside of the top 5 European leagues to find an opening 20 matches on par with City’s, in the form of Guus Hiddink’s PSV Eindhoven.
Other records also fell or were matched tonight…
With 11 consecutive away wins going back to last season, Manchester City have now equalled the record set by Chelsea in 2008.
City are now unbeaten in 20 league games against Newcastle – a new club record (previous: 19 vs. Barnsley between 1898 and 1987)
You are watching history being rewritten, Blues. Enjoy every moment of it.
