“I’m not ready for Manchester City” Dutch midfielder signs new deal amid interest from City

Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong, a young player tipped to go far in the game, has signed a new deal with the Dutch giants that will keep him there until 2022.

This comes after he was linked with a host of prolific European clubs, including Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, who his skill set would seem well-suited for.

However, at 20, the Netherlands under-21 international has smartly decided to continue his development in Amsterdam for now and was asked about City’s alleged interest after putting pen to paper.

“I’ve read it too, haha,” he laughed. “I do not think I’m ready to play at the first team at Manchester City or something like that.

“Right now I really just want to develop here at Ajax and become a solid starting player. Especially in midfield. Then we’ll see further.”

It may be a case of ‘watch this space’ as far as City’s interest goes, with club scouts sure to continue monitoring the youngster’s development ahead of a possible future bid for him.
