Pep’s Presser: Kompany update, Foden seriously injured, will David Silva return against Bournemouth?

Pep Guardiola addressed the media at the CFA this afternoon ahead of Manchester City’s Premier League tie with Bournemouth tomorrow, where they have the chance to extend their record-breaking win streak to 17.

The first hot topic was Vincent Kompany and his latest comeback from injury. The news is good with City’s captain due to return in the next few days – although Bournemouth may come too early.

“Kompany is much, much better,” the City boss confirmed. “I think in the next days, he will be ready. I don’t know if he will be ready for tomorrow. We will have to see.”

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk has been linked with a move to the Etihad, but Pep was coy on any January signings.

“John Stones is coming back soon so we will decide (on signings). I’ve said many times: the winter market is difficult compared to the summer time.”

Fernandinho is reported to have already signed a new deal. Pep said simply:

“He knows for a long time how important he is for us.”

Rising star Phil Foden has been spotted in a leg brace with crutches this week after going off injured against Leicester. Unfortunately, the news isn’t good…

“He’s injured. It’s not good. He will not be able to play,” Guardiola said. “We were lucky with De Bruyne against Spurs. With Phil, we were not lucky. It’s a ligament. He’ll be out for a time

“The referees need to protect the players.”

Pep was asked if David Silva will return this weekend against Bournemouth, but couldn’t give a clear answer and would not elaborate.

“I don’t know. I don’t know.”

On being named in an investigation by Spanish police into Catalan independence, Guardiola didn’t sound too concerned:

“We will see what happens.”

City’s incredible winning run in the league started away at Bournemouth in August with Raheem Sterling’s epic last gasp winner.

“It was important after the draw against Everton,” Guardiola told the press today. “Nobody expected then we would win 16 games in a row. After that, we won against Liverpool. You are not always able to win games by a big margin so in that moment, it was important.”
