Mario Balotelli. He made you laugh, cry and occasionally tear your hair out in frustration.
One thing is for sure, the Italian maverick will never be forgotten by Manchester City fans for his on and off-the-pitch antics. On the pitch, his sole assist during his three seasons at the Etihad was for the most famous goal in the history of the Premier League.
When Mario left for Milan at the beginning of 2013, there was a general feeling that it was the right move. His career began to decline soon after, a move back to England with Liverpool not going well. However, he is performing well now in Ligue 1 with Nice and has 16 goals in 21 games across all competitions this season.
Now for a big question: Would you have Mario back for free?
The man himself, now 27 so by no means old even for a footballer, has been speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport about a number of issues, and spoke with particular fondness about his time at City.
“No doubt that is where I enjoyed my best ever season,” the Italian told the famous newspaper. “It’s a truly unique place — I would even go back to play there for free. I’m aiming to play on at least another five, six years at the very top.”
Mario said he still has ambitions of playing “at a big club to win something great again,” and his interviews betray a special place in his heart for Man City.
Unfortunately, Balotelli doesn’t seem the quintessential Pep Guardiola player so any chances of a return seem slim – but would you have him back, Blues?
