Fernandinho has already put pen to paper on a new Manchester City deal that is understood will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the end of the 2018-19 season, Sam Lee of Goal reports.
There had been some concerns over the 32-year-old’s future, with his previous deal due to expire at the end of the current season.
All fears can now be put to bed with Lee reporting that a deal has already been signed, committing the outstanding Brazilian midfielder to City until the end of next season, with the option to negotiate a further year. An announcement is expected in the coming weeks.
Fernandinho is perhaps City’s most crucial player and Pep Guardiola always seems reluctant to rest him, due to a lack of obvious alternatives for the holding midfield role with Yaya Touré’s legs not what they were.
City are expected to dip into the market for another defensive midfielder next summer who will firstly rotate with Fernandinho and in the long term replace him in front of City’s defence. Sergej Milinković-Savić of Lazio and Borussia Dortmund’s Julian Weigl are two of the names who have been linked with a move to the Premier League leaders.
