Manchester City expected to submit January offer for Bundesliga left-back – report

Will Manchester City sign a specialist left-back in January? It’s a question on many lips, with the dilemma being that Fabian Delph has done an excellent job in the position since Benjamin Mendy was sidelined long-term, but an injury to Delph could have serious ramifications on City’s ambitions.

A number of left-backs have been linked with a switch to the Etihad Stadium in recent times, including Faouzi Ghoulam (who has since renewed with Napoli), Spain under-21 international Aarón Martín of Espanyol, and Southampton’s England international Ryan Bertrand.

The latest name to appear has been the impressive Philipp Max of Augsburg, with the Daily Mail reporting on Sunday that City had dispatched scouts to watch him during Augsburg’s 3-3 draw with Freiburg in the Bundesliga.

German newspaper BILD has picked up on this report, adding, “Manchester City is expected to submit an offer [for Max] to FCA in the winter.”

Should City go ahead and make an offer, Pep Guardiola would look to recruit the second son of a former Bundesliga player, after Leroy Sané, who is the son of former striker Souleymane Sané.

Philipp Max is the son of former Borussia Mönchengladbach, Schalke and 1860 Munich forward Martin Max, who made one appearance for Germany in 2002.

Augsburg general manager Stefan Reuter has said on winter transfers, “Nothing is planned,” but added, “If a player comes up to us and has an interesting offer, we have always said that we are ready to talk.

“If we think that it makes sense, then it could happen. But if either side has a bad gut feeling, we’ll leave it.”

Augsburg certainly have left the door open for City, or any other interested party, to swoop for Max, who has more assists than any defensive player in Europe’s top leagues with 9 in 17 league appearances.

Max himself knows nothing about any imminent offers, and said, “I’ll fly to New York with my girlfriend – we’ve never been there. I’ll then spend Christmas with my family in Recklinghausen.”

Will Pep Guardiola look to plunder the Bundesliga again for one of its current assist kings? Time will tell…
