Manchester City duo play full 90 minutes as partner club Girona surge into La Liga’s top 6

City Football Group member Girona FC are enjoying a great run of form and today’s win over Getafe at the Estadi Montilivi moved them into La Liga’s Europa League spots.

The Catalan club, who have five Manchester City players on loan, won 1-0 with the only goal of the game coming from former Middlesbrough man Cristhian Stuani, who has proven to be a prolific goal scorer since his return to Spain.

Three Manchester City-owned players featured, with midfielder Aleix García – in only his fourth La Liga start of the season – and regular right-back Pablo Maffeo both playing the full 90 minutes.

Olarenwaju ‘Larry’ Kayode, a summer signing from Austria Wien, came on for the last 15 minutes, while Douglas Luiz, who could be on the move in January, was an unused substitute. Colombian winger Marlos Moreno, who has also failed to make an impact at the CFG club, didn’t make the match day squad.

Girona are for now in 6th place, Spain’s final Europa League spot, although 7th place Villarreal will re-take the position if they win their ongoing game in hand against Celta.

The success of Girona, who were promoted to Spain’s top flight for the first time last season, is important not only for its local fans, but Manchester City, who are sending top prospects on loan to the partner club.

A place in either UEFA competition, with the Europa League the most realistic, would give young City loanees further opportunities to develop and experience the game at a high level.
