After making a 10-athlete shortlist for the prestigious BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year last month, Man City wonderkid Phil Foden has taken a step closer to winning the prize.
The BBC have announced tonight that Foden is on the final shortlist of three for the award, along with gymnast Ellie Downie and para-skier Millie Knight.
17-year-old Foden, nicknamed the “Stockport Iniesta”, is enjoying a great year and it got even better last night when he was handed a full Champions League debut by Pep Guardiola in City’s 2-1 defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine.
Foden will be hoping to push for more first-team action, particularly with such a busy schedule ahead, including a Carabao Cup game against Leicester City in which he has a good shot of featuring. Winning the BBC YSPOTY award would just cap off a great year for the gifted young City starlet.
The winner will be announced during the BBC Sports Personality show on Sunday, 17 December.
