Pep Guardiola and Yaya Touré addressed the media in the Ukraine today ahead of tomorrow night’s Group F finale against Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League.
Yaya, who played for the now-defunct Donetsk side Metalurh Donetsk earlier in his career, spoke in both English and Russian and claimed the Blues are playing the best football on the continent.
“Our team is practising the best football in Europe but we want to play against the best teams to see where we are!” the 34-year-old, who may get a rare start tomorrow night, said.
“I think teams respect us. We are in a good moment. We are full of confidence. The way we control games is fantastic.
“Shakhtar have a beautiful team, a great squad, a great coach. For us it is a big challenge to play against them.”
Pep Guardiola delivered some potentially bad news when it was his turn to talk, casting doubt on whether David Silva will be fit to face Manchester United this weekend. Mind games or truth?
“David Silva has been left behind because he has a little problem. I don’t know if he’ll be able to play on Sunday.”
When pressed about Silva’s problem later on, Pep elaborated a little.
“He felt uncomfortable after his goal. He felt something. Hopefully he can play on Sunday.”
City are tipped to go far in this year’s Champions League, possibly even to win it, but Guardiola said it’s too early to think about such things.
“We are playing well but it does not mean we will go on to win the competition. The most important thing is that last month we were OK. We believe in what we can do.”
Earlier today, Marca report that City had offered Lionel Messi a €100million signing-on fee to ditch Barcelona for the Etihad in the summer. Pep’s response this afternoon?
After tomorrow night’s game, City’s eyes turn to the Manchester derby. Pep shared some thoughts on Sunday’s big game.
“We just play to win the game. I assure you, sooner or later we will lose, but the next day we will recover. I can promise you we are going to try to win the game.”
