City Loan Watch: Roberts wins silverware, Angelino finds the net, Girona starts for Douglas, Aleix and Marlos

We start in Spain where Girona have been in action in both La Liga and the Copa del Rey. At the weekend, they faced high-flying Real Betis in a tightly contested and dramatic game which saw both sides score in the dying minutes of a 2-2 draw. Pablo Maffeo was the only Manchester City loanee to start and play the full game. However, there was growing concerns after the match as the young right-back was taken to taken to hospital as a precautionary measure. Aleix Garcia and Douglas Luiz also featured in the second half. Then on Tuesday night in the Copa del Rey, both midfielders were given a full start alongside a rare appearance for Marlos Moreno. The Colombian winger produced one of his best performances for the club as he picked up an assist after showing some tricky skill before crossing the ball for Johan Mojica to volley in for the opener. Girona went into the game seeking to overcome a 2-0 deficit, however, the damage was done in the first game at home and could only pick up a 1-1 draw away at Levante. Girona currently sit comfortably in 10th position in La Liga and surely survival will be the main priority for the club, rather than a cup run in their first full season in the top flight.

In the second tier, Yaw Yeboah featured for Real Oviedo as they beat Numancia 3-1. The Ghanaian forward has struggled for minutes for Oviedo in the Segunda but was proactive when he came off the bench after 30 minutes and even had an effort disallowed. Oviedo move up to 10th only two points behind the play-off positions.

In the Eredivisie, NAC Breda continue to find life in the top flight to be very difficult. After an 8-0 mauling at home to Ajax only two weeks ago, the Dutch side travelled to Heracles in a match which would have been earmarked as a potential 3 points. Angelino started the game and opened the scoring with an effort from far outside the box, albeit aided by a deflection. However, the lead was short lived as the home side pulled back a goal almost immediately, before taking the lead just 8 minutes later. Manu Garcia and Thierry Ambrose also started the game while Pablo Mari and Paolo Fernandes were brought on in the second half in order to try and overcome the deficit. NAC Breda are now seven competitive games without a win and face a huge game at home to Excelsior at the weekend.

Back in England, Joe Hart continues to find life at West Ham to be difficult. The England number one is without a clean sheet since 30 September and this run extended after the Hammers’ 1-1 draw at home to Leicester City. West Ham controlled much of the game in David Moyes’ first home game as manager but were on the back foot early on after a strike from Mark Albrighton. The home side pulled one back before half time but were unable to find a winner late on in a tightly contested match. Much was the same for Angus Gunn as his Norwich side dropped a valuable two points at home to Preston North End in a match that ended 1-1.

Meanwhile, Bersant Celina is struggling to find consistency with Ipswich Town. The Kosovan winger was brought on for the final half an hour of Ipswich’s 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa at the weekend before featuring for an hour on Tuesday night in a shock 1-0 victory away at Derby County. A division down in League One, Kean Bryan continues to star as a makeshift centre-back for Oldham Athletic. The natural holding midfielder has been integral for Richie Wellens’ side and helped them keep a clean sheet as Oldham drew with Gillingham. Rodney Kongolo featured for the first half of Doncaster Rovers’ 2-1 victory over MK Dons.

In Scotland, there has been domestic cup success for Patrick Roberts at Celtic. The young English starlet featured in the second half for the final 13 minutes as Celtic defeated Motherwell 2-0 in the final of the Scottish League Cup. The winger was brought on for James Forrest and assured another title for Brendan Rodgers in his reign at the club. While in the SPL, Brandon Barker finally picked up an assist for Hibernian. The winger featured for the first 79 minutes and set up the goal for Simon Murray as they drew 1-1 away at Hamilton Academical. However, there wasn’t such positive news for Aaron Nemane who wasn’t involved in the 18-man squad as Rangers were defeated 2-1 away at Dundee.
