Pep’s Presser: Preparations for Southampton, Guardiola talks Mangala’s future, Raheem’s potential

Pep Guardiola once again addressed the media at the CFA today ahead of tomorrow’s game against Southampton, the last of a busy November ahead of an even busier December.

It has been business as usual on the training ground, with Pep saying the group are focused.

“We trained today and prepare mentally for Southampton. We are focused on what we have to do tomorrow evening.”

Perhaps City’s best performer at the moment is Raheem Sterling, but the City boss still believes he has improvement in him.

“The way we want to play as a team helps individual performances. Like I said many times, Raheem is still young and there are a lot of things he can do better.

“Not just Raheem, yesterday in training the players who didn’t play against Huddersfield trained amazing.”

City have been linked with a move for Real Sociedad defender Iñigo Martinez today, and the obvious sacrifice would be Eliaquim Mangala. But Pep suggested the Frenchman could be sticking around for a while yet.

“Mangala is a player for us and is going to stay here,” Guardiola revealed. “In the winter break and the summer break we are going to ask everyone if they are happy or not.”

On the subject of late goals, Pep said bringing on Gabriel Jesus for Vincent Kompany against Huddersfield was to send a message to his team.

“We don’t panic. When we decide to change Vincent for Gabriel Jesus we send a message to the team that we want to win. When that happens they believe that we want to win. Winning games in a row help the team believe in what we want.”

City come up against a very capable Southampton side tomorrow, coached by a man Pep knows well – Mauricio Pellegrino. He returned Pellegrino’s kind words from yesterday.

“Mauricio Pellegrino made an amazing job in Alaves last season with young players. We were together one or two seasons and it was an amazing experience. He was so curious about football always asking about tactics.

“I’ve not seen him for a long time.”
