Ederson: I’m honoured and happy to be playing for ‘great club’ Manchester City

It’s already safe to say that in Ederson Moraes, Manchester City have landed a great young goalkeeper, one who has instilled confidence into a defence that was shaky last season.

The 24-year-old Brazil international has settled in well since his big money move from Benfica, and Pep Guardiola complimented him at his pre-Huddersfield press conference.

“When you buy one player, especially from another country, you wonder how they will react and settle. But he’s settled quite good and he’s so calm,” Pep said.

“So in the bad moments, good moments, always the same behaviour. He gives us a lot of confidence.”

Ederson has been speaking to Sky Sports and talked about his journey of getting to Manchester City.

“Halfway through last season rumours started doing the rounds that Manchester City were interested in signing me,” Ederson said.

“Other clubs were interested as well, but I just wanted to keep doing what I was doing over there.

“When the season ended, my agent told me that Man City had shown the most serious interest. I was very pleased to find out that such a huge club wanted to sign me.

“On top of that, Pep Guardiola is a brilliant manager and the team is fantastic, so I felt very happy and honoured and now I’m here playing for this great club.”

It isn’t just Pep himself who is influencing the City number one, but his talented coaching staff, notably goalkeeping coach Xabi Mancisidor, who arrived with Manuel Pellegrini and was retained when Guardiola took over.

“Xabi gives Claudio and me specific goalkeeping drills to do. Our main role is to make saves, the ball work comes after that,” Ederson explained.

How about those exquisite long passes we regularly see from the Brazilian?

“I’ve always been very good at playing long balls. That was an attribute that my old club Benfica used to exploit because you can’t be offside from a goal-kick.

“So if our opponents were playing a high line, our strikers could have a high starting position to try to receive the ball and score.”

Ederson will hope to add another win and clean sheet to his impressive record at Man City when the Blues face Huddersfield Town this afternoon.
