Manchester City starlet Sinan Bytyqi becomes loan scout after being forced into retirement

Highly-rated Manchester City younger Sinan Bytyqi has been forced to retire at the age of 22 with a heart condition, as revealed in an interview with Mike Keegan of the Daily Mail.

City have kept the situation quiet but news broke in the Netherlands a year ago when the former Austria U21 international had to cut short his loan spell at Go Ahead Eagles.

And Sinan has now revealed exactly what happened, saying: “The manager pulled out a piece of paper and told me that they had found something on my annual heart monitoring test in Manchester and I had to go back to England.

“They said if I continued playing I would have a four per cent chance of my heart stopping and that if I stopped, that would be one per cent.”

Bytyqi had been enjoying his second loan spell in the Eredivisie following a stint at SC Cambuur, but his time at Go Ahead Eagles would be the last of a promising career cut short.

City have shown great class in looking after the youngster though, and Txiki Begiristain promised the club would stand by him no matter what he decided.

“Txiki said that they would not cut my contract and that they would stand by me whatever I decided,” Sinan said.

Then he contacted Fergal Harkin, City’s scouting manager, and that led to him being assigned a new role off the pitch, as a loan scout.

“He [Harkin] looked after me while I was on loan. He said he was going to build a team and I was welcome to work with him. I wanted to do that because I know how difficult a loan can be.

“I watch players, provide reports and try to support them.”

His first assignment as a loan scout was to watch his former City EDS teammate Angus Gunn, who recently won a call-up to the England national team, feature for Norwich against Bolton. A week after that he flew over to Girona to watch City’s loan contingent in action.

Sinan told the Daily Mail: “I have to thank City for giving me a chance. For me the best job in the world is getting paid to play football and the second best is getting paid to watch it.”

From everyone at City Watch, we wish Sinan Bytyqi the best of luck in his new role!
