Manchester City are in the race to sign Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka, who is subject to heavy European interest with his contract running out next summer.
The 22-year-old, who has an impressive 6 goals in 12 caps for the German national team, is also linked with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea, and now Pep Guardiola has his eyes on the player, Simon Mullock of the Sunday Mirror reports.
Considered one of the Bundesliga’s hottest properties, Goretzka would join fellow Germany internationals İlkay Gündoğan and Leroy Sané were he to move to the Etihad, but the competition is fierce for his signature.
And that could prompt City to move for him in January, with Schalke likely to be open to cashing in rather than losing their star midfielder on a free transfer at the end of the season.
City will be in the market for midfielders with Yaya Touré out of contract in June and possibly heading to New York, and while enjoying some of the best form of his career, Fernandinho now well into his 30s and unlikely to perform at this level for many more years.
At 22, Goretzka on a free transfer for whoever lands him and has both the technical qualities and versatility that Guardiola appreciates in a player.
