The one negative of today’s 2-0 win over Leicester at the King Power Stadium was an early injury to John Stones, who has been outstanding at the back for the Blues this season.
Stones had to be replaced by Eliaquim Mangala, who besides a couple of stray passes, put in a solid performance next to the returning Vincent Kompany.
After the game, Pep Guardiola confirmed that it’s a bad one and that Stones will be missing for up to six weeks, which would mean him missing games against the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham.
“It is unfortunate for us and for John and I think he might be out for six weeks with that type of injury,” Pep said. “We don’t have a lot of central defenders. But the spirit in the team and with all the players is good so we are going to find a solution.”
Luckily, Nicolas Otamendi is now available for selection after missing today’s game through suspension. Guardiola will hope Kompany can stay fit after another long absence or will find himself short on options in a busy period of fixtures.
On the club captain, Guardiola said: “We know what a competitor and how strong Vincent Kompany is as a defender both with the ball and without the ball. He helped us a lot at the end of last season to win seven games in a row.
“Hopefully he can be fit and safe for the next period of games.”
