Pablo Maffeo fends off Manchester City target to win Catalan football award

The stock of Manchester City right-back Pablo Maffeo is on the rise as the youngster continues his productive loan spell at Girona FC.

It was reported on Monday that the 20-year-old is in line for a promotion to Pep Guardiola’s City first team squad next season, and his performances are set to be officially recognised over in Catalonia.

Maffeo has been named the player who showed the most potential in all of Catalan football during the 2016-17 season, when he was also on loan at Girona and helped them win promotion to Spain’s top flight.

The Spain under-21 international fended off rumoured Man City target Aarón Martín of Espanyol and Sassuolo’s Pol Lirola to win the honour, which he will receive at an event held at the Antigua Fàbrica Damm next Monday.

Pablo has made 10 starts in La Liga for Girona this season, recently assisting a goal in their famous 2-1 win over Real Madrid. He also recently won a call-up to Spain’s under-21 set-up, just one level below their senior national team.
