Manchester City may be looking to the future and a day when record goalscorer Sergio Aguero is no longer around, with the Daily Mail reporting today that Blues scouts are watching Swiss wonderkid Breel Embolo.
The 20-year-old joined Schalke from Basel in the summer of 2016 for £20million, but suffered a serious injury soon after his big money move, limiting him to just four starts in the Bundesliga last season.
Embolo, who was also linked with Manchester United before opting for Schalke, has now recovered and has made 5 appearances for the Gelsenkirchen club this season, 4 of them off the bench.
And the Daily Mail claims that City are going to be keeping a close eye on his progress, which could lead to a bid if he impresses.
City currently have two natural strikers on the books, Aguero and Gabriel Jesus, having failed to close a deal for Alexis Sanchez in the summer after Kelechi Iheanacho was allowed to leave. However, the likes of Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sané have offered an improved goalscoring threat from elsewhere, meaning the absence of a third striker hasn’t been felt.
Even so, with Aguero hinting at a return to Argentina in 2019, City may be succession planning with Breel Embolo one of those they are monitoring.
