From France: Manchester City are interested in towering defender despite lack of game time

It has been previously reported by both Alan Nixon and the reputable Martin Blackburn of The Sun and now there is the first news from France that Manchester City have a real interest in Lyon centre-back Mouctar Diakhaby.

That is the word from SFR Sport who claimed to have their own information that Pep Guardiola is keen on the towering 20-year-old, a France under-21 international.

City are said to be keen despite Diakhaby’s struggles for game time this season, which sees him behind Brazilian veteran Marcelo, who arrived at Parc Olympique Lyonnais from Beşiktaş in the summer.

Though highly-rated, Diakhaby has made only four appearances in Ligue 1 this season, two of them starts. He did manage to score in one of those appearances, against Angers, while he has also featured in the Europa League twice, including playing the full 90 minutes in Lyon’s 3-0 win over Everton last week.

Martin Blackburn of The Sun suggested earlier this week that City could look to use Lyon’s interest in Eliaquim Mangala to launch a move for Diakhaby. Mangala has played only 19 minutes of Premier League football this year, putting his chances of going to the World Cup with France in jeopardy – and that could entice the 26-year-old to move in January.
