Manchester City scouts watch left-back on Monday with January bid planned – report

Manchester City will return to one of their summer left-back options with a move for Espanyol’s Spanish under-21 international Aarón Martín in January, ESPN FC reports.

There were strong rumours from Spain in August that Man City had or were in the process of lodging a bid for the 20-year-old, who is considered one of Europe’s most promising full-backs, but nothing transpired before the window shut.

With Benjamin Mendy out for much of the season through injury, City must now decide whether to dip into the market in the new year, since Fabian Delph has done an impressive job in the left-back role, despite that not being his natural position.

One of the main rumoured targets, Faouzi Ghoulam of Napoli, was badly injured in City’s win over the Serie A side last week, and Aarón Martín could be the next best option for Pep Guardiola.

It is claimed by ESPN FC that City again had scouts watching him last Monday when Espanyol beat Real Betis 1-0, with Aarón playing the full 90 minutes. And it’s further reported that he is now Pep’s number one target to reinforce the left-back position as City look to compete on multiple fronts.

Another linked with a move recently is Ryan Bertrand of Southampton, who would be another home-grown England international but is almost eight years older than Aarón and would likely cost more.

Sergio Aguero became Manchester City’s all-time record goalscorer with his goal against Napoli.
