Manchester City’s target to replace Benjamin Mendy suffers same long-term injury as Mendy

Manchester City have been linked with a January move for a new left-back lately as they consider options to replace Benjamin Mendy, who is touch-and-go to play again this season.

One of the main targets in the press has been the impressive Napoli player Faouzi Ghoulam, who is out of contract in June and subsequently could be available for a cut-price fee in January.

However, the news is bad for both Napoli and City – if in fact they were planning a move for him.

The 26-year-old shone in the early stages of last night’s game between Napoli and City at the Stadio San Paolo and it was quite clear how they became unbalanced when he was forced off through injury.

Like Mendy, the injury didn’t appear too bad on first glance, but Sky Italia is today confirming that the Algerian international has suffered the same injury as Mendy – a ruptured right anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

If City do plan to dip into the market for another left-back in the new year, it won’t be Ghoulam. If he fails to renew his Napoli deal, he could still be picked up by a club for free next summer, but the question now for Pep Guardiola is does he stick with what he has – Fabian Delph being his main left-back in Mendy’s absence – or spend in January.

A host of left-backs have been linked with a switch to the Etihad Stadium besides Ghoulam, including Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Aarón Martin (Espanyol) and José Luis Gayà (Valencia).

Sergio Aguero became Manchester City’s all-time record goalscorer with his goal against Napoli.
