Guardiola: Napoli massacred us in the first 20 minutes. Against Feyenoord and Shakhtar we’ll play…

Pep Guardiola was delighted with how his rampant Manchester City side reacted to going behind at a hostile Stadio San Paolo on Wednesday night as the Blues passed one of their biggest tests this season.

The City boss spoke to the Italian press after the 4-2 win and once more was full of praise for both his own players and Maurizio Sarri’s side.

“In the first 20 minutes we were massacred, destroyed, but I’m happy with how my boys reacted.

“The reaction says a lot about this team. Yesterday we talked a lot, we know that at very high levels it’s difficult to play for 90 minutes, but the important thing is always how we react.

“I’m in love with how Napoli play and I hope they can stay in the competition because football needs teams like Napoli. In short spaces, Napoli are the best team in the world at the moment.”

Sergio Aguero became City’s all-time record goalscorer and Pep was happy for his talisman.

“I can only congratulate him (Aguero). He is a legend and I’ve told him to enjoy this moment.”

Napoli’s chances of reaching the Round of 16 are on thin ice, and they may be worried about City slacking off in their last two games. A win over Feyenoord at the Etihad would mean City are guaranteed to finish first, and if that happens, the temptation may be there to send a Carabao Cup type side over to Ukraine to face Shakhtar ahead of the Manchester derby.

Pep vowed to live by his principles of always playing to win, although he will certainly want to rotate in the next two games.

“We will play to win against both Feyenoord and Shakhtar. I have always played to win in my career.”

Was tonight’s win the best of Man City’s season so far? Guardiola was asked that question and stopped short of saying it was, but it’s certain up there.

“So far we have played so many good games, but considering the start of Napoli in the first 20 minutes, I think what we have achieved is a fantastic result.”
