Manchester City did not receive a warm reaction from Napoli fans as they arrived at the seafront Hotel Vesuvio earlier today – and it should come as no surprise.
The Napoli ultras are notoriously fiesty, and the club has even banned belts from tomorrow’s fixture to try and prevent attacks against visiting City fans.
They are known to camp outside of hotels occupied by opposing teams ahead of bigger games and make noise all night to try and keep players awake so they they will be tired come kick-off time. It happened in March ahead of Napoli vs. Real Madrid in the Champions League Round of 16, but to little effect as Zidane’s side handed them what is still their most recent defeat on home turf.
It remains to be seen if Napoli fans will do that tonight, but a good number of fans were there as the Man City players and coaching staff arrived, and greeted them with a chorus of whistles and jeers.
City have splashed out €4000 for a suite for Pep Guardiola at the Hotel Vesuvio, the first club to do so for a coach.
Hopefully Pep and his players didn’t forget their noise cancelling earplugs or it could be a sleepless night on the Gulf of Naples for Manchester City’s stars.
