Manchester City youngster Chidiebere Nwakali has been handed his first call-up to the Nigeria national team, being named in the Super Eagles’ 24-man squad to face Algeria and Argentina this month.
The 20-year-old midfielder won the U17 World Cup with Nigeria in in 2013, leading to Man City signing both he and Kelechi Iheanacho soon after.
Nwakali didn’t burst on to the scene like Kelechi, having had unproductive loans spells at Atlético Malagueño and Girona FC in Spain before finding his feet in Norway with IK Start and Sogndal Fotball, where he is currently stationed.
However, his impressive form in Norway’s Tippeligaen has led to him being summoned by Nigeria boss Gernot Rohr for the World Cup qualifier against Algeria and prestige friendly against Argentina.
If selected for the Argentina game, Nwakali could face off against Sergio Aguero and Nicolas Otamendi, who have both been named in Jorge Sampaoli’s squad for the upcoming international dates.
Iheanacho, who left City for Leicester in the summer, has also been called up, meaning a reunion will take place for the two U17 World Cup winners.
