He recently made headlines for his man-marking job on Lionel Messi, and today Manchester City youngster Pablo Maffeo played a huge part in thwarting Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates as Girona FC stunned Real Madrid at the Estadi Montilivi.
The Catalan club came from a goal down to record an historic win, perhaps the biggest in their club history, and Maffeo was one of two on-loan City players to feature, with Larry Kayode making a late appearance off the bench. Aleix Garcia and Douglas Luiz were unused substitutes, while Marlos Moreno continues to struggle to even make the bench.
But it was Maffeo’s performance that will excite City fans as he made an incredible last ditch interception to stop Ronaldo late on and helped keep the iconic world superstar quiet throughout the game.
Maffeo’s defensive performance was complete with 5 tackles, 7 interceptions and 1 clearance. But his contributions extended to the attacking half of the pitch, with 2 key passes and most crucially 1 assist as he set up Portu’s match-winning goal. He almost found the net too, hitting the post with an effort.

The 20-year-old’s performance won him an 8.6/10 rating at WhoScored, the joint highest (with Isco) of anyone on the pitch.
Maffeo has a task at Manchester City with both Kyle Walker and Danilo ahead of him at right-back, two very expensive recruits. La Liga high-flyers Valencia are said to be interested in signing him permanently, but performances like today’s may make Pep Guardiola consider integrating him soon. After all, this is a youngster who has kept Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo quiet recently.
