You may remember in past transfer sagas that targets who eventually joined the club, such as Ederson and Benjamin Mendy, followed Manchester City on Instagram before officially joining (in Ederson’s case, months before).
A footballer following another club on Instagram isn’t proof he will join them, or Lionel Messi would be wearing the sky blue of City right now, but is often an indication that something could be happening.
And something that is likely to get people talking is the fact that Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl, a player long rumoured to be of interest to City, has decided to follow the English club on Instagram.
Weigl, 22, follows many players on Instagram, including Raheem Sterling, but City are the only English club he’s chosen to follow on the social media platform, interestingly enough around the same time he followed the official Premier League account.
Perhaps Weigl is just a fan of the beautiful football Guardiola’s side are playing and wants to keep up – or could there be something more to it?
On paper, Weigl could be viewed as one of the few missing pieces of Pep’s jigsaw – a young holding midfielder with superb passing ability and a great reading of the game. He would fit well into the side Guardiola has put together at the Etihad.
As always after ‘x follows y’ stories on social media, it’s probably not worth getting too excited, but…
