Controversial Spanish referee appointed for Manchester City vs. Napoli

Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz has been appointed for Tuesday night’s Champions League tie between Manchester City and Napoli at the Etihad Stadium.

The 40-year-old is known to be quite fussy and made a number of controversial calls last season when he took charge of City’s thrilling 5-3 win over Monaco in Manchester, including booking Sergio Aguero for diving when the Argentine had been blatantly fouled.

The hope for all watching (and playing) will be that Lahoz allows this match between two of Europe’s most exciting football teams flow without stopping it too often.

Lahoz previously took charge of City’s Champions League Round of 16 tie against Dynamo Kyiv in February 2016, which saw City win 3-1 over in Ukraine. So despite his habit of contentious decisions, City have a fine record with the Spaniard in charge.
