Pep Guardiola is ‘in love’ with Borussia Dortmund’s prodigious midfielder Julian Weigl and wants to add him to the Manchester City squad next summer, according to a report by Spanish newspaper AS.
The 22-year-old has been on City’s radar for a while now but last December extended his stay at the Westfalenstadion until 2021. This would make him difficult to sign, but not impossible if an enormous fee was offered to the Bundesliga side.
Barcelona also have Weigl on a list of potential players to renew their squad, but AS claims that the ‘great threat’ comes from England in the form of Manchester City.
Pep Guardiola is said to be ‘in love’ with Weigl, who is almost the perfect example of the Guardiola midfielder, and has ordered sporting director Txiki Begiristain to go for him next summer.
It could come down to who is willing to pay the most out of Man City and Barça, that is of course if Weigl wants to leave Dortmund, the club which signed him from 1860 Munich in 2015.
Weigl has been a sensation for BVB, averaging a 90.9% pass completion rate in the Bundesliga, Champions League and Europa League over the past three seasons. He would be the right profile to replace a Yaya Touré or Fernandinho in the holding midfield role for City and could well be a leading target for the club in next summer’s transfer window.
However, City have their eyes on a number of other midfielders capable of playing a similar role. Sergej Milinković-Savić (Lazio), Danilo Pereira (FC Porto) and Lorenzo Pellegrini (AS Roma) have been linked with a move to the Etihad, while City also had a scouting presence at Anderlecht’s 4-3 win over Mechelen last night, which saw Belgium midfielder, Leander Dendoncker, play the full 90 minutes.
