For the first time since leaving them to join Manchester City in 2015, midfielder Aleix García will face off against the club that developed him, Villarreal, on Sunday afternoon.
García is one of five City players currently on loan at Girona FC in La Liga and the Catalan club host Villarreal this weekend, in what will be a “special” occasion for the promising 20-year-old.
“It will be a special match for me and the whole family,” Aleix said. “I will look at it as just another game though, because we need the three points.”
García joined Villarreal as a young boy in 2005, working his way through the youth system before making his first-team debut in the 2014–15 season. Aware of his talents, Man City signed him up and he has enjoyed game time under both Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola, with nine first-team appearances at the Etihad.
His loan spell at Girona got off to a slow start and not until the fourth round of matches, when they faced Sevilla, did he get his first minutes, appearing for 23 minutes off the bench.
However, in the last two games, against Barcelona and Celta Vigo, he has started and says that has helped him.
“After two starts I feel more important.”
