Valencia are interested in signing highly-rated Manchester City right-back Pablo Maffeo, who is currently stationed on loan at La Liga rivals Girona FC for the season.
Maffeo, 21, recently earned media attention for man-marking Lionel Messi during Girona’s game against Barcelona, and having identified the right-back position as one that could be improved, Valencia boss Marcelino and sporting director Mateu Alemany are looking at Pablo.
Though the youngster, recently called up for Spain’s under-21 team, is enjoying a third loan spell at City Football Group member Girona, his long-term future is in some doubt with two right-backs in their prime years, Kyle Walker and Danilo, ahead of him in the pecking order at Man City after being signed for hefty transfer fees.
And according to Superdeporte, Valencia are aware of the situation and believe there is a possibility that they could land Maffeo on a permanent deal next summer. City may be open to a deal given that Maffeo is likely to be third-choice right-back at best, unless Pep Guardiola decides to use him elsewhere on the pitch.
As is the standard practice at the Etihad now with any promising youngster allowed to leave, the club would certainly look to include a buy-back or sell-on clause in any sale.
