Manchester City won’t even land target for €18m in January with club taking hardline stance – report

Manchester City face disappointment if they hope to sign Napoli left-back Faouzi Ghoulam in the January window, with Napoli preferring to lose him for nothing next summer than cash in beforehand.

According to Rai Sport transfer expert Ciro Venerato, who was speaking to Radio Crc, Pep Guardiola wants the 26-year-old in the winter transfer window, which is consistent with recent reports, as he seeks another natural left-back in the absence of Benjamin Mendy.

Ghoulam has the ideal profile for a Guardiola side and with his contract expiring in June 2018, City and other clubs – notably Chelsea and Liverpool – have sensed an opportunity to land a major bargain here.

Napoli, who look like they could seriously challenge Juventus for the Serie A title and are in the Champions League, would rather sacrifice a transfer fee than let him go in January. In fact, Venerato stated that the Naples club would even reject an offer as high as €18million.

There is still some hope that Ghoulam will sign a new deal to stay long-term at the Stadio San Paolo, but issues between the player’s brother and Napoli’s outspoken president Aurelio De Laurentiis make it a difficult task.
