England left it late to beat Slovenia and qualify for the 2018 World Cup following another dour performance by Gareth Southgate’s men at Wembley tonight.
Four players on Manchester City’s books started, one of them, Joe Hart, of course out on loan at West Ham. The others, John Stones, Kyle Walker and Raheem Sterling, all play big roles in Pep Guardiola’s side, but didn’t look at the same level tonight as they do for City – perhaps a commentary on the two managers.
Nevertheless, it was Walker who played a huge part in the goal, with an interception and wonderful cross in injury time to former Tottenham teammate Harry Kane, who as always made no mistake in front of goal.
Hart, Stones and Walker played the full 90 minutes, while Raheem was withdrawn after 85 minutes.
