One of the Premier League’s most experienced referees has been handed the whistle for this Saturday’s big game between Chelsea and Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.
46-year-old Martin Atkinson, a veteran of the game, has been named referee for the televised fixture in what will be his first City appointment since the 0-0 bore draw against Manchester United in late April at the Etihad.
Prior to that, he was in charge as City beat Sunderland 2-0 in April and was also the man in the middle for City’s 2-1 win over Arsenal just before Christmas.
For Chelsea, Atkinson was the referee as they beat Tottenham 4-2 at Wembley in last season’s FA Cup semi-final round, and was also in charge as Antonio Conte’s beat Arsenal 3-1 in the Premier League in February.
