Champions League nights were once more dreaded than embraced by Manchester City fans as the club struggled during its early years in Europe’s most prestigious competition. The arrival of Manuel Pellegrini began to turn City’s fortunes in the Champions League and now, under Pep Guardiola, there is a feeling that we may be able to win the trophy itself in the coming years.
City started this year’s campaign well by thrashing Feyenoord at De Kuip in Rotterdam and tonight host Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk, who upset Napoli on Matchday 1 and proved their quality. City, who signed Elano and Fernandinho from tonight’s opposition in years gone by, must not underestimate a squad packed with Brazilian talent including internationals Taison, Fred and Bernard.
Referee Manuel de Sousa returns to the Etihad for the first time in seven years after previously taking charge of City’s 2-0 win over FC Timisoara in the Europa League all the way back in 2010.
Here are the teams selected by Pep Guardiola and his counterpart Paulo Fonseca tonight:
Manchester City XI: Ederson, Walker, Stones, Aguero, De Bruyne, Delph, Sane, Silva (c), Fernandinho, Otamendi, G Jesus
Shakhtar Donetsk XI: Pyatov, Butko, Ordets, Rakitskiy, Ismaily, Stepanenko, Fred, Taison, Marlos, Bernard, Ferreyra
