It has been seven years and one month since Portuguese referee Manuel Jorge Neves Moreira de Sousa last took charge of a Manchester City game, and he will be return to the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday night.
The 42-year-old, commonly known as Jorge Sousa and Manuel De Sousa, has been placed in charge of City’s next Champions League tie against Ukrainian champions Shakhtar Donetsk.
It is Sousa’s first Champions League appointment of the season and those with good memories may remember back in August 2010 when City overcame the now defunct FC Timisoara in a home Europa League fixture, with goals from Shaun Wright-Phillips and Dedryck Boyata.
Sousa was in charge that day, handing out no cards or penalties in a routine victory that saw Roberto Mancini’s side ease into the group stages of that year’s Europa League. And Sousa will be back again on Tuesday night when City meet Shakhtar.
