Benjamin Mendy had his heart set on a move to Manchester City even before the two-legged encounter between the Blues and Monaco in last season’s Champions League, in which the French international was one of the many Monaco stars to impress.
Mendy was City’s most expensive capture of a busy summer transfer window, arriving from the principality club for an initial £49.4million, which could rise in future.
And the 23-year-old, who has quickly become a fan favourite with his social media antics, told City’s official site that a move to the Etihad has been on his mind for a long time.
“That game against City was the most exciting match I’ve played in,” Mendy said in the interview. “I already wanted to join this club, to join Pep Guardiola here so when I saw the draw I started to motivate my teammates.
“City is a club that I liked a lot. When I saw the draw, I thought it was the perfect opportunity. After, when I arrived here for the first leg, I saw the Etihad Stadium and it is magnificent!
“I knew I had to give my best and show what I could do in order to have a chance of coming here and becoming a City player.”
Mendy made his City debut against Bournemouth following a lengthy injury and made a good impression, sending 11 crosses into the box and creating a number of chances and half-chances. He is expected to make his Etihad Stadium debut against Liverpool on Saturday when the two teams meet in the early kick-off.
