Pep’s Presser: Guardiola talks transfers, comments on Jonny Evans, Mendy and Gündoğan fitness

Pep Guardiola has ruled Benjamin Mendy out of contention to face Everton on Monday night, while Ilkay Gündoğan is also unlikely to play much, if any, part with his return being handled carefully. Fabian Delph is also recovering from (another) injury.

The boss said at his pre-Everton presser, “Ilkay Gündoğan has come back, Benjamin Mendy is still not 100% but is almost done, same with Fabian Delph.

“Gündoğan is doing really well, we have to be 100% sure but he played a few minutes and that is the first step.”

Kyle Walker is available for selection having missed the trip to Girona with his wife pregnant.

On the transfer market, Pep was coy, but again hinted there is still business to be done at Manchester City.

“We’ll see how the market will finish. I know how well the club works. Some things are possible and some things are not,” he told the assembled press. “I believe my players are the best, we will decide what is the best to make our club stronger.

“If we have to stay with the players we have right now then we’re happy. If someone can come then we’re happy too.”

On the topic of Jonny Evans, City’s new centre-back target, Pep would reveal little, saying only, “Jonny Evans is a player of West Brom, Tony Pulis was clear.”

City face tough opposition on Monday night in the form of a new-look Everton, who like the Blues, have invested heavily this season. And Pep recognised the challenge that awaits.

“Everton are a top squad and they have bought good players. They are one of the best teams in the league, I am sure of that.”
